Caption Description There are approximately 180 security officers, representing 21 countries and speaking 14 different languages, with the Security and Safety Section of the Office of General Service at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Section has the responsibility for providing guard and fire preventions services for the protection of persons and property in the Headquarters complex; investigating cases of loss, damage and theft, and accident insurance claims and settlement; arranging for the issue of passes and identification cards; controlling traffic in the grounds and garage; administering the regulations governing parking in the garage; providing usher and cloakroom services; and operating the locksmiths' shop.
Seen in the photograph is a security officer checking the grounds pass of a UN staff member at the vehicle entrance to the Secretariat Building of the UN. The passes are inspected periodically for validity. [June 1969]
