Andean Indian Programme in Peru
Caption Description
A nurse registering patients at the Health Centre of the village of Plateria, in the Andean highlands of Peru.
The Health Centre is one of many facilities which have been set up under a programme designed to bring better living and working conditions to Indians living in isolation, at altitudes of from 9,000 to 15,000 feet, in the Andean highlands of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Five international Organizations - the United Nations, UNESCO, WHO, FAO and ILO - are working closely together in cooperation with the governments in carrying out the programme, ILO being the coordinating Agency.
