Headline Two Finnish Soldiers Killed, Five Seriously Injured as Rescue Lorry Strikes Anti-Tank Mine
Caption Description Two Finnish soldiers were killed and five seriously injured in a minefield accident on 14 February. The incident took place in the western sector of the new UNEF temporary buffer area about 15 kilometres West-South-West of UNEF forward Headquarters in Fanara, on the coast of the Great Bitter Lake. At 1302 hours GMT, a Land Rover driven by Capt. Olavi Iisakki Kaski struck an anti-tank mine (M-15 USA) in an uncharted Israeli minefield. Capt. Kaski and a radio operator were slightly wounded. A Finnish rescue team riding in a lorry rushed to the scene to rescue them but the vehicle hit another anti-tank mine. Killed were Sgt. Risto Jaako Latva Hakuni and Sgt. Risto Tapani Majasaari. Seriously injured were Sgt. Jorma Hannes Kolehmainen, Capt. Mauno Kaleva Maard, Pte. Jukka Antero Pesoner, Pte. Erkki Reino Huhani Maekinen, and Pte. Kari Johannes Marttunen. Two Finnish battalion ambulances with doctors and an engineer team went to the area. The Israeli armed forces sent a helicopter which evacuated the injured soldiers to Tel Hashmoer Hospital near Tel Aviv.
Finnish Battalion soldiers prepare to remove the lorry after the Israeli Anti-Tank mines (M-15) in the uncharted area were uncovered and defused by members of the Egyptian Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EODT).
