Headline Second Committee Calls for Closer Ties between Assembly and Training Institute
Caption Description The Second Committee (Economic and Social) this afternoon adopted without a vote a draft resolution which would have the General Assembly invite the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) to work within its field of competence, taking full account of the Declaration and the Programme of Action on the Establishment of a New International Economic Order, under the proposal, as amended. The Assembly would also take note of the report of the Executive Director of UNITAR and note with satisfaction the increasing effectiveness of the Institute in the discharge of its responsibilities. It would also express the hope that the Institute would have greater and wider financial support. Also this afternoon the Committee began consideration of the question of the UN Environment Programme.
Maurice F. Strong, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), making an introductory statement on the activities of UNEP during the past year.
