Congo (Leopoldville) Encourages "Self-Help" Projects by People
Caption Description
Seventeen community development projects are underway, in the Congo to encourage the rural populace to use "self-help" and mutual aid principles to better their living conditions. The projects were established by the Central Government of the Republic of the Congo (Leopoldville), and the United Nations Civilian Operations in the Congo (ONUC) is also assisting in the programme.
Youngsters watch "animateurs ruraux" paint a new home in Luluabourg. Sixteen new homes were completed in the town through "self-help" methods. Each house required about 600 hours to complete at a cost of 40,000 Congolese francs and consists of 3 bedrooms, 1 living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. September 1963.
