Headline Rebuilding South Korea
Caption Description In the war-shattered Republic of Korea there is a great need for large-scale aid from outside. There are still great shortages of foods and clothing.  At least 1,000,000 new homes are needed, about one out of every four South Koreans is living in a makeshift shelter. Having shared the burden of hurling back the aggressor, the United Nations also shares the burden of reconstruction.  It has set up the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), financed from voluntary contributions by governments, to help in the basic rebuilding of the country. What this Agency does is initiated by requests from the Government of the Republic of Korea with which it works closely. The Agency also cooperates with other organizations having similar objectives.
This photograph shows sawn lumber being unloaded from a steamer on to the docks at Pusan. The lumber is part of the foreign aid programme and will be used for housing and school classroom construction.
