Headline
Foreign Aid for Korea
Caption Description
After three years of fighting and destruction, the Republic of Korea is trying to rise to its feet again, but the road from war ruin to revival is a hard and difficult one. There are still great shortages of food, housing and clothing and general living standards are low. There is a great need for large-scale aid from abroad. A great deal of this aid is being supplied by the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), set up by the United Nations to help in the basic rebuilding of the country and financed by voluntary contributions from governments. A vast flood of goods from abroad has been funneled into Korea through UNKRA which has, so far, bought more than 50 million dollars-worth of supplies and equipment for use in almost every branch of the country's economy. UNKRA works closely with the Government and cooperates with other organizations having similar objectives.
This photograph shows pipes, billets, wire-rods, etc., being unloaded at the Pusan docks. These materials are part of the foreign-aid programme to assist in the reconstruction of Korea.
