Caption Description
The present backlog of houses in the Republic of Korea required to replace those destroyed during the fighting, to care for refugees from North Korea and to meet the normal increase in population, now approximates 1,000,000 units. The United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), in conjunction with the ROK Ministry of Social Affairs, has initiated a project designed to develop a sound and practical long-range housing program. In the Pusan area alone, where disastrous fires have added to the shortage by leaving some 40,000 people homeless, the project is designed to provide construction materials for approximately 2,000 homes and the services of a construction engineer for a period of one year.
Seen here at the Akasaki docks in Pusan, UNKRA-imported lumber is being, loaded on to trucks by specialized Korean carrying teams. In the background are stacks of logs imported by UNKRA from Canada and the Philippines to aid the Korean reconstruction program. Lumber is scarce in Korea though there are many local saw-mills.
