Headline The Korean Fishing Industry
Caption Description Next to agriculture, the fishing industry is the biggest source of food for the Republic of Korea, not only providing about 85 per cent of the animal protein needed by the people but also constituting a major source of foreign exchange. The fighting hit the industry very hard indeed. Much fishing gear and about a tenth of the fishing fleet were lost. In 1953, the catch recovered to 266,000 from 219,000 metric tons in 1950, but the yearly catch must reach between 400,000 and 450,000 metric tons to meet domestic and export needs. More fishing craft and marine engines are therefore urgently needed. So are nets, ropes, other gear and materials for making ice to preserve the fish. Last year, the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) budgeted $1,900,000 for the industry. Its projects include rebuilding the wholesale fish markets at Seoul and Inchon, and construction of twenty-three fishing vessels. In Addition, the Agency has set up a revolving fund to make loans for purchasing new fishing boats and repairing existing craft.
