Food for Korea
Caption Description
After three years of fighting and destruction, the Republic of Korea is trying to rise to its feet again, but the road from war ruin to revival is a hard and difficult one. There still are great shortages of food and clothing. General living standards of the 21 million people are low. There is a great need for large-scale aid from abroad. Having shared the burden of hurling back the aggressor, the United Nations also shares the burden of reconstruction. It has set up the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), financed by voluntary contributions from governments, to help in the basic rebuilding of the country. A vast flood of goods from abroad has been funneled into Korea through UNKRA which has so far bought more than $50 million worth of supplies and equipment for use in almost every branch of the country's economy.
This photograph shows foreign-aid grain being unloaded from small Korean boats in the Pusan harbor where cargo ships often can find no berthing space at the dock. [No exact date]
