Headline UNKRA's Technical Assistance - Fishing Boat Construction
Caption Description In the past Korean fishing boats have been made mainly from Japanese cedar; however, this material is no longer available and other woods; such as Douglas fir, red cedar, pine, Philippine mahogany, etc. must be employed. The use of these lumbers requires methods of framing, construction and preservative treatment which at present are not in common use in Korea. The ROK Bureau of Fisheries has requested from the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) the recruitment of an individual experienced in boat building to provide technical assistance to Korean ship builders in the designing and building of improved type fishing craft, and to teach improved construction methods through on-the-job training. UNKRA also supplied lumber, paint, other construction items, diesel engines and required ship fitting accessories.
