Headline UNKRA Sparks Rehabilitation of Korean Fishing Industry
Caption Description Next to agriculture, the fishing industry is the biggest source of food in Korea, where seafoods provide some 85 per cent of the animal protein consumed and constitute a major source of foreign exchange. To repair the severe damages to the industry caused by the war, replace fishing craft deteriorated through long use and rehabilitate the industry in all its phases, the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) has allotted some $2,950,000 for the purpose and has set up a revolving fund to make loans for purchasing new fishing boats and repairing existing craft. Many of the fishing boats covered by the UNKRA program are being constructed locally. Among these are five 13-ton, long-line Eastern type boats designs for shark fishing, which were recently completed at the Chosun Boat Building Company's ship-yard in Pusan.
Seen here in the Chosun Company's ship-yard, fishermen and their sons watch the launching of the new boats. [No exact date]
