UNKRA Helps Install YWCA Rural Training Centre in Tongnae
Caption Description
On a farm several miles outside Pusan, a Canadian Welfare Worker, Miss
Barbara Broadfoot, is in charge of a unique home for girls sponsored by the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). Some thirty girls, all of them orphaned or separated by the war from their families, live and work here and are trained to become useful self-supporting citizens. They sew, knit and run the farm and vegetable garden. The United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) donated $3,300 to repair the farm house and to provide the initial equipment of machines and tools. The staple diet of Korea is kimchi, a form of picked cabbage and red peppers.
Here, Miss Broadfoot (center) and two of the girls inspect kimchi pots to check the level of supplies for the winter. The girls made their own kimchi, using vegetables from the home garden at the training centre in Tongnae.
