Headline UNKRA Sparks Rehabilitation of Korean Fishing Industry
Caption Description More fishing craft and marine engines are urgently needed in Korea to repair severe damages to the fishing industry wrought by the war and to replace units badly deteriorated through long use. Next to agriculture, the fishing industry is the biggest source of food for Korea. Seafoods provide some 85 per cent of the animal protein consumed by the people and constitute a major source of foreign exchange. The United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) is sparking rehabilitation of the fisheries industry through the purchase and construction of fishing boats and the provision of operational supplies for the industry. UNKRA has allotted some $2,950,000 for this purpose and to supply a limited number of loans to qualified fisheries organizations and fishermen for the purchase of new and the repair of existing crafts. To the traditional cry of Man-eun Mulkoki, (""many fish""), five brand new fishing boats recently slipped into the ocean from the Chosun Boat Building Company's shipyard in Pusan. The boats are of an improved 13-ton long-line Eastern type, designed for shark fishing. This photograph shows the first of the five boats completed at the Chosun Company's yard as it glided down the slipway with the new owner and crew aboard.
