UNKRA Gives Assistance to YWCA Rural Training Centre in Tongnae
Caption Description
The United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) has donated $3,300 to repair the farm-house and to provide initial equipment of machines and tools on a farm outside Pusan which is being used as a rural training centre under the sponsorship of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). Some thirty girls, all of them orphaned or separated from their families by the war, live and work at the Centre, where they are trained to become useful self-supporting citizens. They sew, knit, and tend the farm and vegetable garden, under the supervision of Miss Barbara Broadfoot, a Canadian welfare worker who is in charge of the Centre. Despite the industriousness of its people, Korea has still not recovered from the devastation wrought by the war. All types of clothing are in short supply and very expensive.
Here, Miss Broadfoot (right) examines the contents of a welcome gift parcel of children's clothing sent from the YWCA in Canada.
