Caption Description
Mr. Lucien De Groote, of Brussels, Belgium, one of the ten winners of this year's International Essay Competition, looks at a statue symbolizing Mankind and Hope which is part of the decoration of the Trusteeship Council chamber at the United Nations Headquarters. The statue which stands nine and one half feet high, was carved out of teak wood by Mr. Starcke, a Danish sculptor. It stands on a pedestal near the window, and represents a girl with arms upraised, reading towards a bird which hovers with outspread wings above her head.
