Assaying Korea's Mineral Resources
Caption Description
The Republic of Korea has considerable mineral resources. But the full extent of the country's mineral wealth has yet to be measured. The UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) has, therefore, built a mineral assay laboratory with the most modern equipment, at Taejon, to test ore samples to assess the commercial value of the mines now in existence and make a proper evaluation of the new finds. UNKRA provided $160,000 for this project, which was set up in agreement with the Government and the UN Command.
Mr. Johan Poul Nielsen, representative for Korea of the (Danish) Smidth Construction Company, observing a refining process, as KTAM cement chemist Schwarzkofh removes a sinter sample from the assay laboratory's furnace, assisted by Mr. Frans van der Hoeven, of Hilversum, UNKRA Mining Engineer.
