Headline The Need for Housing in Korea
Caption Description The present backlog of houses in the Republic of Korea required to replace those destroyed during the fighting, to care for refugees from North Korea and to meet the normal increase in population, now approximates 1,000,000 units. One out of every four South Koreans now lives in a make-shift shelter. The United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), in conjunction with the ROK Ministry of Social Affairs, has initiated a project designed to develop a sound and practical long-range housing program, which includes construction of approximately 5,000 permanent dwellings.
This photograph shows a section of Suwon, with broken-down houses along both banks of a river.
