About 2.5 million people face a famine in Sudan. The people displaced by the war in Southern Sudan are being helped by Operation Lifeline Sudan, a consortium of the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF and 35 non-governmental organizations. The nine year relief effort has saved thousands of lives and the World Food Programme says it will need 54 million to provide emergency aid until April 1999.

Headline New Jersey Warehouse Assembles 14,000 UNICEF Kits for Foreign Midwives
Caption Description Here, in a Jersey City warehouse, Miss Yupa Sookchareon (2nd from left), a Thai nurse presently training to be midwife-teacher at New York City's Maternity Center Association, tests a foetal stethoscope from one of the 14,000 aluminum midwife kits being sent by the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) to practicing midwifes in 27 different countries of Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Latin America. By early summer, the kits, which are now being assembles at the rate of 700 a day, will be distributed by governments to graduates of UNICEF-assisted midwife training courses in their countries.
Upon completion of her studies, next August, Miss Sookchareon, who comes from the Nakornswan Province in Northern Thailand, will return to the Bangkok Sanitorium and Hospital as Supervisor of Midwife Training. She is here on a six-month fellowship from the Government of Thailand.
Seen with her are: Mr. Charles Karp (left), of the warehouse, and Miss Marion Strachan, Educational Director of the Maternity Center Association.
* The Maternity Center Association, a privately supported organization, is one of the three U.S. schools training midwifes. [No exact date]
