Headline Low-Cost Housing in Thailand
Caption Description The Housing Welfare Bank of Thailand is sponsoring a 1,500-house development scheme, to be built near Bangkok. The Thai Ministry of Finance has made available Tcs, 50,000,000 (about US $2,500,000) for the project, which will include a civic centre with shops and a maternity and child welfare clinic. The houses of the design selected for the project (one of which is shown here) will cost the equivalent of $1,200; they have bedroom, living-room, kitchen, a combined bathroom and toilet, and a verandah. Site conditions in the Bangkok area are usually swampy, as the water table is only a foot or two below ground level. Most houses are, therefore, built on timber or concrete piles and raised well above ground. Good quality hardwood timber is plentiful and constitutes the main building material in and around Bangkok. The typical Thai urban small-cottage construction features wide enves, adequate cross-ventilation and underfloor space for washing and clothes drying in the rainy season; glass is seldom used, and side hung or top hung hinged wooden shutters are standard; adjustable louvres are, however, fast gaining popularity. In Thai houses it is customary to detach the kitchen from the living quarters, this cottage is no exception to the rule. [No exact date]
