Headline UNKRA House-Building Programme
Caption Description To help relieve the acute housing shortage caused in Korea by the war, the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) is carrying out an overall housing program in 33 cities throughout the country. UNKRA has allocated $4,500,000 for building materials and also given technical assistance in the various types of construction. The largest number of houses are of cottage type and constructed according to the earth block system. For this program, UNKRA brought from South Africa Landcrete machines, which make strong, durable building blocks out of a mixture of earth and cement in proportions of about 15 to one. A new type of housing - two-story terraced houses - was introduced recently. 1,000 of these units have been erected already in the Seoul suburbs, standing above the traditional Korean cottages with their oriental roofs, and the emergency shacks (such as those shown here) that mushroomed during and after the war.
