New Type of Houses Introduced in Korea
Caption Description
A new type of housing - two-story terraced houses- has been introduced in Korea by the Government and the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA). Built by army engineers with materials valued at $550,000 supplied by UNKRA, 1,000 of these units have been erected already in the suburbs of Seoul. Each block of houses accommodates from three to six families. The houses are compact, practical and attractive, with enough variation in style to prevent monotony; the ground floor has a living room with radiant heating, kitchen and toilet; the first floor is divided into two or three bedrooms and a small terrace. The houses are allocated by the government; they cost about 1,000,000 Hwans, including land, payable in six years after down-payment. This is part of the overall housing program carried out by UNKRA in 33 cities throughout Korea. The Agency has allocated $4,500,000 for building materials and also given technical assistance in the various types of construction. This picture shows a three-family unit of new type houses.
