The Cheju-do Power System
Caption Description
Some 280,000 people live on Cheju-do, a rocky, volcanic island lying off the south coast of the Korean peninsula. Four power plants built by the island by the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) were put in operation recently, revealing the island as a symbol of UN aid in the Pacific.
The Cheju-city plant stands above a narrow stream where women congregate at all hours to wash clothes. The women are delighted with the easier working conditions provided by the overflow of lukewarm water into the icy-cold stream, and this has become the favorite washing place in the city.
