Headline Seoul's Shoe-Shine Boys School
Caption Description Seoul's Shoe-Shine Boys School (officially known as the Seoul's Vocational Boys School) was started in 1952 by Pvt. Kwon Ung Pal, a young Korean transferred from a combat unit to help round-up beggar boys and put down thieving in the city.  Some 670 children now attend the school; they all are shoe-shine boys, street vendors, newsboys, messengers, etc. Help came to the school from volunteers of the UN Women's Guild, in the form of $10,000 worth of UNESCO Gift Coupons to equip a workshop, and from UNKRA, which added $5,000 worth of building materials to this sum.
This picture shows Kwon Ung Pal, now Sergeant in the Korean National Police with no other duties than caring for the boys and the school, wishing some of his pupils ""a prosperous day"" as they set out for work in the morning. [1956]
