UNKRA's Help to Korea: Flat Glass Plant
Caption Description
Flat glass comparable to modern window glass has never been produced in Korea, although a type of flat sheet was turned out prior to the Korean War which was in general unsatisfactory. In addition, during the fighting, such rudimentary flat glass equipment as existed was either destroyed or badly damaged. In order to revive and improve the industry, the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) made an extensive study of the field and determined the existence of adequate supplies of most of the materials required for modern flat glass manufacture. To meet an estimated annual demand of 12,000,000 square feet of flat glass after reconstruction years (present demand runs at approximately 25,000,000 sq.ft. annually) when the demand has leveled off, UNKRA has allocated $2,149,074 for the construction of a modern plant in Inchon, and has signed a contract with the Frazier-Simplex International Corporation (USA) for design of the plant, procurement of all materials and equipment required; construction of the plant and ancillary strictures and facilities; installation of all equipment; supervision of the construction; and operation of the productive facilities for a period of one year, in order to train Korean plant personnel. Seen on this photograph is a reproduction of the tentative design for the proposed flat glass plant.
