Headline UNKRA's Help to Korea
Caption Description A classroom at the Pong Hack Elementary School in Pusan where the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) materials have gone into permanent-type classrooms to replace those damaged during the fighting.
Sixty-four per cent of South Koreans classrooms were destroyed, damaged or diverted to other uses during the fighting; 80% of the instructional equipment was lost and the teaching staff severely depleted. Thousands of classrooms are needed to accommodate students of all ages, and books and laboratory equipment are scarcely available. To meet these pressing needs, UNKRA  provided approximately $8,500,000 during 1952-53 for educational projects and has this year budgeted some $1,060,000 for classroom construction and repair, which will result in the repair of 450 damaged classrooms and construction of 240 permanent ones.
