UNKRA Aids Koreans Fishing Industry
Caption Description
The Korean fishing industry is second only to agriculture in the provision of food for the Korean people and is also a major source of foreign exchange. The industry has been severely affected by war destruction and unarrested deterioration, and the rehabilitation of the fishing fleet is vital to the recovery of the industry. The program of the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) for 1954 includes fisheries projects designed to assist the Government's five-year plan for the construction of approximately 4,000 wooden fishing boats, provide technical assistance to Korean shipbuilders in the construction of improved type fishing craft, purchase deep sea craft to relieve the pressure, on coastal waters by enabling fishermen to re-establish grounds formerly fished, and purchase and import operational supplies and equipment required for the continuation and development of the industry.
Here in a Pusan boat-yard, Korean shipbuilders lay the deck of a new fishing boat designed and built under UNKRA's program of aid to the Korean fishing industry.
