Caption Description
The work of rehabilitating Korea is proceeding rapidly, although the plans of the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA) are threatened by a shortage of funds, having received to date only $122,400,000 of a target budget of $266,000,000. The country's economic position is still not strong, though it has improved in the past year. There is still considerable distress, there is a shortage of some foods, and the need for clothing, shelter, and medical care remains great.
This photograph shows a group of farmers building a new home to replace one of the many destroyed during the fighting. The slender wooden framework will be laced with rice-straw strips and packed with wet clay, then thatched.
