Ethiopian Soldier Amputee Visits United Nations
Caption Description
Private Gabremicail Tumebo, a member of Emperor Haile Selassie's Imperial Bodyguard, today visited the permanent Headquarters of the United Nations. Private Tumebo lost his leg on the battlefield in Korea last year, while serving as a member of the UN forces there. Through the efforts of a US Army nurse, the World Veterans Federation, the American Veterans Committee and various other organizations and individuals, it was possible to bring him to the United States for the fitting of an artificial leg. The three-month course of prosthetic: treatment and rehabilitation has now been completed, and Private Tumedo will return to Addis-Ababa next week. From left to right, at a press conference he gave at UN Headquarters: Mr. Abate Agede, of the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington; Mr. Aaron Lasser, of the Kessler Institute (of rehabilitation); Mr. Zeleke Bekele, Interpreter; Private Tumebo; Mr. Curtis Campaigne, Jr., National Chairman of the American Veterans Committee; and Mr. Robert Yoakum, Secretary-General of the World Veterans Federation.
