Headline Head of UNMISS Assesses Security Situation in Pibor
Caption Description The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), David Shearer, travelled to Pibor on 6 March to see first-hand the impact of a sudden outbreak of intercommunal violence on local communities. A series of violent clashes across the Jonglei region over the past two weeks have resulted in many deaths, injuries, the abduction of women and children and theft of thousands of cattle. More than 8000 people have been displaced from Pibor town and surrounding villages, finding sanctuary on a site next to the UN base. In response, UNMISS has redeployed peacekeepers to reinforce the Pibor base, established new temporary operating bases in Anyidi, Gumuruk, Manyabol and Yuai and is conducting daily patrols to hotspots to deter further violence.
Four women listen to news about new violence in their home village at the camp for internally displaced next to the UN base.
