Viola Cheptoo (right) and Albert Korir, both from Kenya, visit UN Headquarters a day after completing the New York City Marathon. Viola Cheptoo finished 6th among women in the 5th November race, and Albert Korir, who won the NY Marathon in 2021, finished 2nd among men.
Viola Cheptoo has dedicated her marathon runs to her late friend, world champion Agnes Tirop, who was found stabbed to death at her home in Kenya in October 2021. Since her death, Cheptoo and a collective of Kenyan women runners have come together to advocate against gender-based violence through their organization Tirop’s Angels.
