Headline Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the United Nations with Shuttle-Mir Docking Mission
Caption Description Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali (seated, left) holds an interactive video-conference with the combined crew of the second Shuttle-Mir Docking mission, STS-74/Atlantis, shown on the television screen as they are seated in the Core Module of the Mir space station. The crew, comprised of representatives from Canada, The Russian Federation, The United States and the European Space Agency (Germany), is the largest international crew to date.
The approximately 10 minute-long live video conference originated from the United Nations television studios at its New York Headquarters. As a symbol of this cooperation, United Nations emblems, including the United Nations flag and sign as well as a commemorative parchment scroll of the Outer Space Treaty and the Rescue Agreement were flown aboard, the first time these treaties were physically in the environment they govern.
