First Exchange of Wounded Prisoners of War in the Middle East
Caption Description
An Egyptian-Israeli agreement covering a number of major problems was signed on 11 November at 1310 hours GMT at kilometre marker 101 on the Cairo-Suez Road. It provided for unhindered non-military supplies for the city of Suez and for Egyptian units on the east bank of Canal, the exchange of war prisoners and the evacuation of wounded civilians from Suez, and the replacement of Israeli by United Nations checkpoints on the Cairo-Suez Road.
The International Red Cross arranged for the first exchange of wounded prisoners of war. At 0645 hours GMT, on 15 November, 26 wounded Israeli prisoners left by a Red Cross airplane (Balair) for Tel Aviv. At 0820 hours GMT, 44 wounded Egyptian prisoners arrived by a Red Cross airplane in Cairo. Photograph shows Egyptian General Adly Sharif conversing with an Israeli wounded prisoner on board the aircraft supplied by the Swiss Government, before it left for Tel Aviv. The whole prisoner of war exchange was expected to take six to eight days.
