Security Council Imposes Anti-Terrorism Sanctions on Taliban in Afghanistan; Adopts Resolution 1333 by 13 Votes, 2 Abstain
Caption Description
Acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the Security Council adopts resolution 1333 (2000), demanding that Afghanistan's Taliban authorities act swiftly to close all camps where terrorists are trained in the territory under their control and cease the provision of sanctuary and training for international terrorists. The resolution, adopted by 13 votes in favour to none against with two abstentions (China and Malaysia), bans the provision of military supplies and training to the Taliban. It also imposes a broad range of diplomatic, economic and transportation sanctions, and demands that the Taliban, as well as others, halt all illegal drugs activities and work to eliminate the illicit cultivation of opium poppy, the proceeds of which financed Talibani terrorist activities. It also demands that the Taliban tum over Usama bin Laden to appropriate authorities in a country, where he has been indicted, where he would be returned to such a country, or where he would be arrested and effectively brought to justice.
Security Council President Sergey V. Lavrov (Russian Federation) (left) presides over the meeting.
