End of More Than 500 Years of Portuguese Colonialism in Africa
Caption Description
The strong tide of nationalism already running high during World War II gathered momentum after the war, and in many areas the battle to throw off colonial rule became fierce and bloody. This was particularly so in the Portuguese territories in Africa: Portuguese Guinea, Angola and Mozambique. In 1974 a dramatic change of regime in Portugal led to the end of more than a decade of fighting in Portugal's African territories, and with the fighting, the end of more than 500 years of Portuguese colonial domination in Africa. Three liberation movements fought successfully for Angola's independence and are now fighting for the right to the country. The UN Secretary-General has appealed to the international community to help the three movements reconcile their differences.
At dusk some of the remaining Portuguese soldiers patrol an area near Luanda in an armoured vehicle. [July, 1975]
