Headline Farming for Development
Caption Description For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, land reforms.
Nubian farmers resettled in Kom-Ombo working in a field. The construction of the Aswan High Dam necessitated the resettlement of about 50,000 Nubians (17,000 families) whose homes and lands were to be flooded. Since June 1964 the Nubians have been resettled in the area of Kom-Ombo (Aswan District) where 33 new villages with 17,000 houses have been built and 14,700 hectares of land have been reclaimed and distributed. The World Food Programme (WFP) helped the Government in making this project a success. [No exact date]
