Headline General Assembly Recognizes People’s Republic of China as Only Legitimate Representative of China Expels "Representatives of Chiang Kai-Shek"
Caption Description The General Assembly voted tonight to recognize the representatives of the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and ""to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations affiliated to it"". The Assembly acted by adopting a draft resolution, sponsored by Albania and 22 other nations, by a vote of 76 in favour to 35 against, with 17 abstentions.
A view of the Assembly Hall shortly after a roll-call vote was taken on a 22-nation draft resolution (document A/L.632 and add. 1-2) asking the Assembly to decide that any proposal which would result in depriving the Republic of China of representation in the U.N. was ""an important question under Article 18 of the Charter"", requiring a two-thirds majority for adoption. The resolution was rejected by a roll-call vote of 55 in favour to 59 against, with 15 abstentions (see voting boards).
