Lalla Mimouna, Successful Community Development Project in Morocco
Caption Description
The village of Lalla Mimouna (midway between Rabat and Tangiers) in Morocco was the site of a United Nations community development project over six years ago. Thirty weaving workshops, 45 retail stores, a dispensary, a Community House and a modern school for 800 children were built between 1962 and 1964 by the villagers themselves with materials supplied by the Government of Morocco and with the help of technical assistance experts of the United Nations. When the project was found to be successful it was extended and 200 concrete houses were erected, while a small power plant was built to supply electricity to this, the only village for miles around to have such luxury. Electricity has meant an extension of life for the village which used to close down early in the winter evenings. Now shops stay open longer, a cafe has a refrigerator and a television, and the school can hold evening classes allowing children to continue at school to a much later age.
Leaders of the village of Lalla Mimouna gather at the home of M. Maiz, community leader, (far right), for a discussion. [No exact date]
