Human Settlement: River Blindness in Upper Volta
Caption Description
River blindness (Onchocerciasis) afflicts 1 million people in seven countries in the Volta basin. A large-scale programme, initiated by the United Nations Development Programme and the governments of the seven countries, to eradicate the disease, has freed large areas from the infection and brought the black fly vector under control in 80 percent of the area. Bombore is an area east of Ouagadougou that has been freed from river blindness. Some 300 families have been resettled here from the northern part of the country in seven villages. The government provided public facilities and a plot of land for each family to cultivate. The people themselves worked on their homes and some of the facilities.
