Headline Permanent Mission of Kuwait Presents Documentary Evidence of Environmental  Damage Following Gulf Conflict
Caption Description The Permanent Mission of Kuwait presented documentary evidence using still and video images concerning the environmental damage to their country following the Gulf conflict. Addressing correspondents, Abdul Rahman Al Awadi, Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection in Kuwait and Executive Secretary of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment, said that an extensive number of oil lakes had been created as a result of the destruction of the country's oil wells. The oil had also affected marine life and about 200 kilometres of Kuwait's shore-line. The fumes and smoke from the burning oil had directly affected the health of the elderly, asthmatics and children. On the podium is Abdul Rahman Al Awadi (left), before the slide and video presentation in the Economic and Social Council chamber. On the right is Mohammad Abulhasan, Permanent Representative of Kuwait.
