Headline Security Council Approves Largest Peacekeeping Operation in History of United Nations
Caption Description The Security Council approved the establishment of a $1.9 billion peacekeeping operation in Cambodia involving 22,000 soldiers, police officers and civilian administrators to oversee the country's transition to a new administration after multi-party elections to be held by May 1993. It took that action by unanimously adopting resolution 745 (1992) to establish the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) for a period of eighteen months. Under the peacekeeping plan, the United Nations will administer the country, disarming rival groups, clearing mines, repatriating refugees, monitoring the police and civil administration, and supervising the balloting.
Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering (United States), President of the Security Council, addresses members of the Security Council. On the left is Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Seated behind Ambassador Pickering is Yasushi Akashi, Special Representative for Cambodia.
