Food Shortages in the Midst of Plenty
Caption Description
For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, land reforms.
Tomato juice being canned at a factory in Lesotho. It has been found that Lesotho's soil is ideal for growing such vegetables as tomatoes and asparagus. With the opening of a vegetable canning factory in Maseru by the Government with assistance from the UN Development Programme, local produce can now be exported to such distant places as Europe.
