Nelson Mandela, Deputy President of the African National Congress of South Africa, raises his fist in the air while addressing the Special Committee Against Apartheid in the General Assembly Hall.
Apartheid consists of hundreds of laws that allow the ruling white minority in South Africa to segregate, exploit and terrorize the vast majority: Africans, mostly, but also Asians and Coloureds - people of mixed race. Under Apartheid, racist beliefs are enshrined in law and any criticism of the law is cruelly suppressed.

Headline South Africa Holds First All-Race Elections
Caption Description South Africa held its first all-race elections from April 26 to April 29, 1994.  The United Nations has been involved with the situation in South Africa for more than four decades.  It has spearheaded the international campaign against apartheid and initiated and supported programmes aimed at alleviating the suffering of its victims.  It has also provided a forum for the representatives of South African organizations such as the African National Congress (ANC) to advance the anti-apartheid campaign.
