Headline Security Council Invites Secretary-General to Appoint Special Representative to Recommend Measures to Help End Violence in South Africa
Caption Description Security Council today concluded its two-day meeting on the situation in South Africa by unanimously voting to adopt resolution 765 (1992) which calls on all parties to cooperate to end the violence and to ensure the effective implementation of the National Peace Accord. The Council invited the Secretary-General to appoint a special representative to recommend measures to help the violence in South Africa and create conditions to resume negotiations for a peaceful transition to a democratic South Africa. The Council also condemned the rise in violence in South Africa, specifically the 17 June massacre at Boipatong Township, and urged South African officials to take immediate measures to end the violence and bring those responsible to justice. There were nearly 75 speakers during the two-day meeting, at the request of the Group of African States, in the context of a resolution by the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
Ebrahim Joosab is among the representatives of political parties and groups of South Africa to address the Security Council.
