A member of the Tarumi Violin Program performs during the Peace Bell Ceremony on the occasion of the International Day of Peace 2024 (21 September). The theme of the International Day of Peace 2024 is Cultivating a Culture of Peace.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. In that declaration the Assembly recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”

The Tarumi Violin Program, founded in 1986, is composed of talented young musicians from the Greater New York Metropolitan area.
Josh Jorgensen (at podium) from Centre for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC), briefs reporters on "A Call to Action for International Humanitarian Law and the Protection of Civilians".

At left is Lisa Doughten, Director of Financing and Partnerships Division of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and at right is Andrea Canepa from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Standing at the press briefing area are 75-year-old chairs symbolizing “the seat of duty”. The gesture emphasizes the Security Council’s unique role as custodian of international peace and security, responsible for upholding and promoting international humanitarian law and responsible to protect vulnerable groups. Each chair portrays one letter of the message “War has limits” and symbolizes the collective responsibility to uphold international humanitarian law. Empty chairs symbolize the courageous presence of humanitarian workers at the front line, often risking their own safety to provide aid and protection. International humanitarian law is crystal clear: We must protect and respect UN and humanitarian personnel.
Philippe Lazzarini (second from left), Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), attends the meeting with the Special Political and Decolonization (Fourth Committee).

The meeting first heard an introductory statement by the UNRWA Commissioner General and held a question-and-answer period and general debate on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

The Council adopted Resolution 2781 (2025) on South Sudan. The Resolution renews until 31 May 2026 the measures on arms imposed by paragraph 4 of resolution 2428 (2018); it further renews until 31 May 2026 the travel and financial measures imposed by paragraphs 9 and 12 of resolution 2206 (2015); and it extends until 1 July 2026 the mandate of the Panel of Experts
as set out in paragraph 19 of resolution 2428 (2018). The resolution was adopted with 9 votes in favour, none against and 6 abstentions (Algeria, China, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Sierra Leone and Somalia).

In the background is Cheryl Pearce (left), Deputy Military Adviser of the Office of Military Affairs of Department of Peace Operations, and Faisal Shahkar, United Nations Police Adviser.

Observed under the theme “The Future of Peacekeeping” this year’s International Day looks at the invaluable contributions military, police and civilian peacekeepers have made over the last nearly eight decades. It encapsulates the spirit of progress and collective action towards creating a more equal, just and sustainable world. Today, more than 68,000 civilians, military, and police personnel serve in 11 UN peacekeeping missions, confronting increasingly complex and interconnected challenges shaped by a shifting geopolitical landscape. Despite the challenges, peacekeepers remain steadfast in their pursuit of peace.
