Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Women Executive Director, addresses the opening of the sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW65).
The sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from 15 to 26 March 2021 under the theme "Women's full and effective participation and decision-making in public life and the empowerment of women and girls".
Secretary-General António Guterres (left) walks with Stéphane Dujarric (centre), Spokesperson for the Secretary-General and Captain Mohammad Abdul-Hussein, OIC of the Executive Protection Unit (right) to brief reporters on the 168 United Nations personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty during 2024.

"The women and men we honour today were not just names on a list.
They were extraordinary individuals -- each one a story of courage, compassion, and service. They were driven by the pursuit of peace. By the urgency to ease human suffering. And by the conviction that every person, everywhere, deserves dignity and protection. This past year has been especially devastating in Gaza. Today’s ceremony includes recognition of 126 of our colleagues killed there -- 125 of them serving with UNRWA," said the Secretary-General.
The Security Council votes on a draft resolution during the meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.

The resolution demanded an immediate unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties, it further demanded the immediate unconditional release of all hostages, as well as the lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The resolution received 14 votes in favour and one vote against (United States). The resolution was not adopted due to the veto by a permanent member.
