Election of New Non-Permanent Members of Security Council
Caption Description
The General Assembly held elections for five non-permanent seats on the Security Council for two-year terms starting on 1 January 2017. Bolivia, Ethiopia and Sweden were elected in the first round of balloting, Kazakhstan in the second round. After the fifth round of balloting, which resulted in 95 votes each for Italy and the Netherlands, the two countries proposed that they share the fifth seat, with Italy serving during 2017 and the Netherlands serving during 2018. The Assembly is to take up again the election for the fifth seat at a later date.
The delegation of Sweden, led by Margot Wallström (centre), Minister for Foreign Affairs, receives congratulations from delegates following Sweden’s election to a non-permanent seat on the Security Council. Pictured at the Minister’s side, Olof Skoog, Sweden’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
