Ivan Šimonovic, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, briefs journalists ahead of the launch of a new book by the United Nations on the global trend away from the death penalty. Mr. Šimonovic said that according to the book, ""Moving Away from the Death Penalty: Arguments, Trends and Perspectives"", in 1975, about 97 per cent of countries were executing criminals, but in 2015, only 27 per cent of countries hand down the death penalty.
