Secretary-General Visits High Norwegian Arctic to See Climate Effects
Caption Description
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was in the high Norwegian Arctic to observe first-hand the effects of climate change on the region. The visit included a trip to the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the French Polar Institute Paul Emile Victor (IPEV), which operate jointly as the French-German Arctic Research Base AWIPEV.
Mr. Ban (right) holds a red helium balloon with Børge Brende, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Norway. The balloon is launched on a daily basis and carries a radiosonde, which measures temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and wind direction. This data is used in weather forecasting and is important for the long-term observation of the atmosphere.
