Liberia Readying to Reopen Schools
Caption Description
Liberia is preparing to reopen schools nationwide, as cases of Ebola continue to decline and the country begins its recovery. The Ministry of Education, supported by the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and other partners, is aiming to resume classes in the coming weeks, four months after the start of the school year was indefinitely postponed by the outbreak.
A critical part of the preparation is making sure schools have the necessary supplies to keep students safe and healthy. At a warehouse outside of Monrovia, UNICEF is assembling Infection, Prevention, and Control, or IPC, kits that will be distributed to every single school in the country. These kits contain buckets for hand washing stations, chlorine, soap, protection gear like gloves and rubber boots, and cleaning supplies like clothes and brooms.
UNMEER has conducted facility inspections to help determine the readiness of schools to provide a safe environment. In addition, UNMEER is using MI-8 helicopters and ground transportation vehicles to help UNICEF and partners distribute the IPC kits.
